The town of Willetton is a large suburb of Perth. Located in the City of Canning, it lies to the south of the state capital. Its population is around 17,250 people.

History

The town was named by its owner Henry Willett, who was granted the land in the 1830s. Development and boundary changes lead to Willetton itself moving slightly west of its original spot. The town was gazetted in 1965.

It wasn’t until the 1990s that most of the housing and infrastructure was finished in the town.

In the 2001 census, the majority of migrants to the area came from East, Southeast or South Asian origin.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today the town is a lively hub of commercial, residential and industrial areas. The Southlands Boulevard shopping centre has two levels of shops, businesses, restaurants and a cinema.

Smaller shopping centres also provide more local amenities.

Willetton is home to a number of schools, including Western Australia’s largest high school.
