South Fremantle is a Perth suburb found 26km south-west of the central business district. It has a population of over 2,800, and is home to the beautiful South Beach.

History

First developed in the 1830s, South Fremantle enjoyed a significant boost at the end of the 19th century. Railway lines improved and an abattoir was built, which serviced much of north-west WA. In 1891, the famous Coogee Hotel opened its doors for the first time. Gold discoveries led to further booms in industry and population, but South Fremantle’s industrial powers waned in the 1980s when residential housing took over.

In addition to the beach, South Fremantle boasts a thriving culinary scene. Nunzio’s Restaurant and Chez Pierre are fine dining favourites, and the suburb is brimming with pizza joints. Asian and Indian eateries abound, and numerous bars and cafes are ready to whet your whistle.
