Preston Beach is a small town in the Peel region of Western Australia and sits off the Old Coast Road. It lies in the Yalgorup National Park, between Mandurah and Bunbury. Preston Beach has a small population of over 200 people.
History
In 1829, two explorers called Dr Alexander Collie and Lieutenant William Preston found Lake Preston and Clifton. They discovered this while exploring the coastline between Mandurah and Bunbury.
In 1959, the “Preston Beach Estate” was privately developed. Together with the “Lakeside Estate”, Preston was incorporated as the locality Yalgorup. The name Yalgorup comes from the Noongar word meaning “place of waters or lakes”. In 1975, the townsite was gazetted. In 1989, the name changed to Preston Beach at the request of the Shire of Waroona.
