Northampton is a town in the Mid West region of Western Australia, 52km north of Geraldton. 480km northwest of Perth, it has a population of over 850 people.
History
First called The Miles, the town of Northampton was gazetted in 1864. It was named after the colony’s Governor, John Hampton. The town was sited in the Nokanena Brook valley between the hamlets around two major copper mines in the area. It is the service town to the micronation, the Principality of Hutt River.
The town is famous for its many wildflowers. It has examples of Aboriginal cave paintings at the Bowes River turnoff. These show the area has been inhabited by Indigenous Australians for thousands of years.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The town is one of the oldest in the state. It has been classified a “historic town” by the National Trust of Australia to recognise the important heritage buildings in the area.
