Newman is a town located in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. It is part of the Shire of East Pilbara, and is over 1,189km from Perth. The town has a population of 5,478 as of the 2011 census.

History

Newman was once known as Mt Newman, and was a town designed to support the development of iron ore deposits. Its name comes from Mt Newman nearby, which was named after a government surveyor called Aubrey Woodward Newman. While Europeans settled in the area around the 1960s, Aboriginal occupation dates back almost 26,000 years.
