Welcome to Mundaring, WA
The suburb of Mundaring located is 34km east of Perth. It is situated within the Shire of Mundaring local government area. It takes its name from the Aboriginal word meaning “a high place” or “on a high place”. The railway has always featured in the development of the area and even today the Eastern Railway still runs through the suburb. The area has a population of just over 6,000 people.
History
The area was first discovered by the explorer Ensign Robert Dale while he was tracing the Helena River up to where the weir now stands. A tract was surveyed by Dale in 1831 from Guildford to York and the settlement at Mundaring grew from this road.
By the 1880s the area was being farmed by settlers and by 1891 trains were stopping at what was then Gugeri’s Siding. The weir in Mundaring was constructed and working by the early 1900s and today it is a popular picnic area.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
From a heritage railway and a trail along the old lines to the history of the area’s connection with the gold rush, there are plenty of local attractions for both locals and visitors. From 1959 to 2000 the suburb was also home of the Bureau of Mineral Resources Geological Observatory. This facility was involved in measuring seismic activity for Western Australia.
