Mt Lawley is an inner northern suburb of Perth, WA, 4km northeast of the CBD. It has a population of over 10,500.

History

The area was occupied by the Yabbaru Bibbulmun Noongar people. They used the nearby wetlands as a camping, fishing, and meeting ground.

The colony was given representative government in 1870. It was at this time that Vincent Street and Walcott Street became boundaries of the City of Perth.

The area was formally proclaimed in 1901. It was named in honour of Sir Arthur Lawley, the Governor of Western Australia from May 1901 to August 1902.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Originally built in 1914-15, the area is home to the Astor Cinema, an Art Deco style theatre that was listed on the State Register of Heritage Places in 1999.

It is also home to the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Famous alumni of the academy include Hollywood actors Heath Ledger and Hugh Jackman.
