The Perth suburb of Midland is the regional centre for the local government area of the City of Swan. Situated only 16km from the city’s central business district, it is a popular area with commuters. The Midland Railway once had their workshops on the site and it was also a main junction for the line. Midland has a population of almost 4,000 people.

History

The railways played a major role in the growth of Midland as a suburb and the Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) were located there for over 80 years. Up until 1966, the former station at Midland was a connecting junction for trains to both Bellevue and Chidlow.

Most of the early development took place around the town hall that was built in 1906 and the Post Office that opened in 1913. By the 1970s the Midland Gate Shopping Centre shifted the lifestyle in the area away from pedestrian to car and bus based shopping trips.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The area has seen recent and ongoing redevelopment and investment in both the infrastructure and leisure facilities in Midland. Many public authorities such as the Western Australian Police Operations Centre and a campus of the Curtin University are coming into the area.
