The riverside suburb of Maylands is located about 4.5km outside of Perth along the route of the Midland railway line. It also has its boundary with the north bank of the Swan River. Following its development in the 1890s, it now falls within the City of Bayswater government area. The suburb has a population of over 12,000 people.

History

The Midland railway line has had an impact on Maylands over the years and in 2000 the station underwent a complete refurbishment. Once a source of clay for the making of bricks, the excavations have been turned into a golf course and used for residential building. The area was also the home of Perth’s main airport until the 1960’s.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Maylands has a small yacht club and a thriving city centre area that hosts a wide selection of café’s, bars, and restaurants. Recent investment in the revitalisation of the area has led to Maylands attracting many new residents and businesses.

The site of the former Blind Institute in Maylands is now the home of the Australian Ballet Centre and there are many active community groups working in the area.
