Manjimup is a town located 307km south of Perth, Western Australia. It is a regional centre for the biggest shire in the South West region of WA and has a population of over 4,100.
History
The town takes its name from the combined Noongar Aboriginal words “Manjin”, which is a broad-leafed edible reed, and “up”, a meeting place.
It was first settled by Thomas Muir, a timber cutter who took up land near the present town in 1856. In 1910, it was declared a town, and a railway from Perth was finished in 1911.
The town’s population grew when it became part of the post-WW1 Group Settlement Scheme.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The town is home to many tourist attractions. These included the Diamond Tree fire lookout, the Four Acres, One Tree Bridge, and Fonty’s Pool. Manjimup Timber Park, a timber museum, is also featured in the town.
