History
The name “Kununurra” comes from the Miriwoong word “Goonoonoorrang”. This simply means “large river”. The town founded in 1961, and built to service the Ord River Irrigation Scheme. This transformed the land around the Ord into a haven of tropical agriculture. Everything from melons to cotton to sugar cane has been grown here since. In recent years, mining and tourism have also played a part in the local economy.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Kununurra and the Kimberley are brimming with things to do. The manmade Lake Argyle, a result of the irrigation project, is a breathtaking sight. A range of cruises are available to traverse it. Purnululu National Park is another huge draw. It’s one of the state’s most striking natural settings, and can be taken in via helicopter tour. Kununurra itself features art galleries, restaurants and boutique shops, as well as a celebrity tree park.
