Kelmscott is a suburb on the Canning River. It is in the south-east of Perth. The suburb has a population of 10,019.

History

Kelmscott takes its name from a town in Oxfordshire. It was one of the first settlements in the Swan River Colony. The modern suburb began its life in 1830.

The suburb celebrated its 175th anniversary in style in 2005. A steam train ran from Perth station to mark the occasion. In 2011, a bushfire broke out and destroyed 72 homes. 37 more homes were damaged.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Residents of Kelmscott hold many diverse events throughout the year. These include the Head of the River regatta, the Kelmscott Show, and an annual bench press competition.

Kelmscott is home to Australia’s busiest KFC drive-through. The bustling suburb has many other stores and restaurants, as well. Locals can drive just 23km down the Albany Highway to Perth.
