Karratha is a city in the Pilbara region of Western Australia which adjoins to the port of Dampier. It has a population of over 19,000.

History

Karratha was set up in 1968 to provide housing for workers of the Hamersley Iron mining company. In 1980, it also became home to workers of the petrol and natural gas operations of the North West Shelf Venture.

The city gets its name from the cattle station of the same name. The name derives from a word in a local Aboriginal language meaning “good country” or “soft earth”.

Karratha has the biggest shopping centre in the Pilbara, Karratha City. It has major food and grocery retailers and many department stores.

Every year, companies in the Pilbara sponsor one of the largest festivals in the North West over two days in August. The FeNaCING Festival gets its name from the chemical symbols that represent industries in the area.
