History

Kalgoorlie comes from an indigenous Australian word that means “place of the silky pears”. The population of Kalgoorlie grew significantly after gold was found in the area in 1893. This drew people in who were hoping to find their fortunes.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

There is a huge mine in Kalgoorlie called the Super Pit. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There is a visitor’s centre, and the mine is blasted each day at 1pm. To work here, you must live in Kalgoorlie.

The Kalgoorlie area is popular with artists, and there are a number of art organisations too. Some of the pubs in the area hire women to walk around in skimpy attire to attract visitors. They are known as the Kalgoorlie Skimpies.
