Kalamunda is one of Perth’s eastern suburbs. The town has a population of 6,636 and is located in the Darling Scarp.

History

Kalamunda takes its name from the native Noongar language. The name translates literally as “home forest”. The Shire uses the motto “A home in the forest,” accordingly.

The suburb has a rich history in the timber trade. The surrounding area was a thriving logging region for many years. This led to the growth of the town, as well as Kalamunda’s railway station.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Kalamunda is largely a residential suburb of Perth. However, there is a lot of activity going on. Three major residential colleges call the suburb home. There is also a thriving local arts and crafts community.

The town is a site of great natural interest. It is notable as a roosting site of the Long-billed Black Cockatoo. Kalamunda National Park is nearby.
