History

The city takes its name from Lake Joondalup. Joondalup is an indigenous Australian word, and the first instance of its use was recorded in 1837.

In 2009, the Western Australian government gave Joondalup “tourism precinct” status. This means that shops can stay open longer.

The Joondalup Festival takes place once a year. It is free to attend, and visitors enjoy a wide variety of attractions including fairground rides, parades and market stalls.

The Neil Hawkins Park has some interesting wildlife including parrots, cockatoos and kangaroos. The area also has several beaches.
