Innaloo is a residential suburb of Perth, located just 9km from Perth’s central business district. It has a population of over 7,500 people, attracted by its rich mixture of residential and commercial facilities.

History

Innaloo was chosen as the name for the area in 1927 after its original name, ‘Njookenbooroo’ was deemed to be too difficult to pronounce. Innaloo was eventually picked from a list of words and names compiled by anthropologist Daisy Bates. It was the name of an Aboriginal woman from Dongara.

The first land was granted to a man named Thomas Mews in 1831. But it wasn’t until the draining of the swamp in Herdsman Lake in 1898 that settlers began to arrive in numbers.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Innaloo is home to the Westfield Innaloo shopping centre. The centre contains major stores, shops and supermarkets, as well as a large food court.

Innaloo also has the largest cinema complex in Perth, the Greater Union Megaplex. It has an 18-screen cinema, an arcade, and a host of speciality restaurants.
