History

Broome is known for its pearling industry. This began in the 1880s when mother of pearl was collected from oysters. When this industry began, indigenous Australians were forced to collect the oysters by diving down with hardly any equipment. Pregnant girls were often sent as people thought they had bigger lungs.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

There is a stunning sandy beach called Cable Beach located 7km from Broome. Occasionally crocodiles have been seen off the coast, but this is quite unusual. A great way to enjoy the sunset is to take a camel ride along the beach. Cable Beach has a section where you can go nude.

Roebuck Bay is a very important site for migrating birds. The best time to see them is summer.
