The suburb of Bicton is located 10km south-west of Sydney’s central business area. This mainly residential region is within the City of Melville local government area. The area was originally settled in the 1830’s as a large vineyard. It is home to Bicton Racecourse and is one of the most affluent suburbs south of the river.
History
Before the area was settled by Europeans, it was home to the local Noongar Aboriginal people. They came into the area to collect food and drinking water. The region features in local creation myths and the sandbar at Point Walter was one of the few river crossings. Bicton was named after the village in Devon, England where one of the first landowners had previously had an estate.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
There are water polo, cricket, and horse racing clubs in Bicton, and the local pool has held a national tournament every year since 2003. There are several golf courses and parks in Bicton and there are bicycle and walking paths along the shores of the Swan River.
The area is well serviced by transport including a tramway, a bus service, and the Canning Highway. There are 3 shopping areas and a strip mall that runs along most of the Canning Highway. Education is well served by state-run schools in the area.
