History

Bateman is named after a family of merchants that arrived in 1830 on the Medina. They worked in the Swan River colony. The father John Bateman built a general store, and became the postmaster, in Fremantle. His sons took over the family business after his death. More recently Bateman has become home to the Noalimba recreation facility and hostel.
