Balingup is a town in Western Australia, with a population of around 443. The town is located 241km from Perth, and 31km from the nearby town of Donnybrook.
History
The name ‘Balingup’ is taken from the Balingup Pool, which is near the river that flows through the town. Balingup stems from the language of the Indigenous Noongar people, and is said to mean ‘one that is situated there at this place’. The town is known for its fruit and vegetable growing, and more recently for its farming of beef and cattle.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
With its claim to farming fame, Balingup hosts two annual festivals: the Small Farm Field Day in April, and the Medieval Carnivale in August. Balingup is also one of the few towns that hikers will pass through while on the Bibbulmun Track, a long-distance walk from Kalamunda to Albany.
