History

The area’s name comes from the Aboriginal Noongar word meaning “grass tree”. Its name was adopted in 1954. The area was designed by the State Housing Commission along with Nollamara and Westminster as part of the Mirrabooka Project. Streets and homes were built in the 1960’s.

The average age of residents is 31. Most residents are Australian-born. Other common birthplaces include Sudan, Italy, Macedonia, Vietnam and Burma.

The area has three primary schools and one high school, Balga Senior High School. The high school has an intensive English Centre to help newly arrived refugees. It also has a program for young parents, a sport-based program for Indigenous students, but doesn’t offer a Tertiary Entrance Exam program.
