Wonthaggi is a coastal town in Victoria. It’s part of Gippsland’s Bass Coast Shire local government area, and sits roughly 135km east of Melbourne. Wonthaggi has a population of more than 4,300.

History

The Bunurong people were the original inhabitants of the Wonthaggi area, with European settlement beginning in the 1820s. Coal was discovered in 1826, and heavy mining took place from 1859 to 1864. A post office was opened in 1887, and the town of Wonthaggi officially came to be in 1910. It was established largely to service the State Coal Mine, which provided 60% of the coal for Victorian Railways at its peak. In 2005, the Wonthaggi Wind Farm was constructed. It currently powers 6,000 homes in the region.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The old State Coal Mine is now a popular tourist attraction in Wonthaggi, as is the Wonthaggi Museum. The town’s coastal location makes it a thriving holiday spot, and it’s well equipped with many shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes. Williamsons Beach, Harmers Haven and Wreck Beach are big surfing and fishing spots, and Bunurong Marine National Park is a haven for wildlife.
