History

South Melbourne was previously known as Emerald Hill. The first European settlers arrived in 1840. Before that, the hill was a sacred meeting place for local tribes. Masses flocked to Emerald Hull during the Victorian Gold Rush.

Emerald Hill became a full-fledged town in 1872 and a city in 1883. After gaining city status, South Melbourne adopted its current name. It is one of Melbourne’s oldest suburbs.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Both Seven Network and Global Television have studios in South Melbourne. The area offers historical interest, with a Victorian town hall and the See Yup Temple.

South Melbourne is also home to one of Australia’s most successful soccer teams. South Melbourne F play their home games at Bob Jane Stadium.
