The coastal town of Portarlington has an attractive location surrounded by beaches, vineyards and olive trees. It is a thriving holiday town and has a population of over 3,500.

History

The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1802. They traded with the native Aboriginal people.

It wasn’t until later in the 1850s that a settlement was established. A large number of Irish people arrived in the area, attracted to the rich pastureland.

Over the next 20 years the town slowly grew and established a post office, church, hotels and flour mill. The pier, built in 1859, boosted trade to and from the town and it continued to grow. The beautiful seaside location also attracted visitors from Geelong and Melbourne.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The town has been a popular holiday destination for more than 100 years. Many people now retire to the town and house prices have greatly increased.
