Paynesville is a popular holiday destination within the Gippsland Lakes region. It lies just under 300km east of Melbourne and has a population of 3,000 people.

History

Paynesville’s original name was Toonalook, which means “place of many fish”. Toonalook was also the name of the first post office, which opened in the town in 1879. In 1886 the Dickinson family decided to change the name to Paynesville.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Paynesville is the “boating capital of Victoria” as it has direct access to Lake King and Lake Victoria. Water surrounds the town on three sides and canals and waterways offer sheltered spots for mooring. It is a popular place among windsurfers, jet skiers and anglers.

The green town also offers a great array of shops and cafés to relax in. A visit to Raymond Island is also a must for every visitor. The small island is known for its large koala population.
