Noojee is a town in the Shire of Baw Baw, in Victoria’s Gippsland region. The town and its surrounding area has a population of 261, according to the 2006 census. It is 128km from Melbourne, 38km from Warragul, and 20km from Neerim South.

History

Noojee was first settled in the 1860s as part of Victoria’s gold rush. Gold was found in the area, and the town quickly became a major timber town when a railway was built between Noojee and Warragul. The town’s name, “Noojee”, comes from an Aboriginal word which means ‘valley of or place of rest’.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Noojee is known for its trout fishing, and a trout farm is located on the fringes of the town. Noojee is also a popular stopping point for visitors on the way to Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort, which is one of Australia’s smaller ski resorts. Noojee also has a number of beautiful hikes and walks in the area, including the Noojee Trestle Bridge.
