Mulgrave is a suburb of Melbourne and sits 21km south-east of the CBD. Its local government area is the City of Monash. It has a population of over 17,000.

History

In 1839, Mulgrave Parish (as it was known then) was first settled in by Thomas Napier, a Scottish builder. He settled on the banks of the Dandenong Creek, building his home in Bushy Park Wetlands, now Jells Park.

Mulgrave gets its name from Mulgrave Castle in York, England. Sir George Phipps, the Earl of Mulgrave, served as the Governor of Victoria from 1879 to 1884.

Mulgrave gives its name to the Mulgrave Freeway, later renamed Monash Freeway. It is best known for “Jacksons Road”, running through the east of the suburb.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Mulgrave is home to the Waverley Gardens Shopping centre, the Village Green Hotel, and the Sunday Mulgrave Farmers’ Market. It is also home to the Australian Rules football team, the Mulgrave Lions.
