Moorabbin Airport is a small airport used by light aircraft in Melbourne.

History

The airport opened in December 1949. Originally, it was going to be named “Mentone”. However, this clashed with the then French airport Menton. The name Cheltenham was suggested, but it was too similar to an airport in the UK.

Its name comes from the nearby suburb with the same name. It was renamed to Moorabbin (Harry Hawker) in 1989. Hawker was an influential Australian pilot.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

It is one of four airports in Melbourne. It generally serves the flying needs of the suburbs in south-east Melbourne. It has five runways that intersect. It’s home to the Royal Victorian Aero Club. It also houses the Australian National Aviation Museum.

It also has several flight training programs. This includes the Oxford Aviation Academy, a pilot training school, which has a campus in the area.
