Montmorency is a Melbourne suburb in the north east of the city. It is located 18km from the Central Business District. It has a population of 8,759.

History

The name of the suburb comes from a farm that was in the area called Montmorency Estate. Residents often call it simply “Monty”_x009d_. The first development in this area occurred in 1917 when a church was built. A few years later a school and railway station were added. Electricity arrived in Montmorency in 1926. Population growth was rapid in the second half of the 20th century.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The main shopping area, Were Street, provides much of interest. There is an ornamental aeration windmill, and the footpaths have mosaics that depict Montmorency oral traditions. There are not many chain stores in Were Street, making it the ideal place if you are looking for something a little bit different.
