Merbein is the most northern town in Victoria. It is located about 553km from Melbourne, 392km from Adelaide and 12km from Mildura. It sits between Mildura and the Murray River. The town has a population of 4,681.

History

Merbein was labelled originally as White Cliffs due to its stunning river white cliffs. The name of the town’s name is an incorrect spelling of “Merebin”, which is the Aboriginal word for “white sandcliffs”.

Soldiers returning from WWI settled in parts of the area. Many streets were named after locals who died in the war.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The town is the home to many shops and recreational facilities, including sporting ovals, a golf club and walking tracks. Visitors can camp alongside the Murray River to enjoy the best views.

The Mildara Blass Winery, founded in 1911, is a popular spot for tourists and is open for tours and wine-tasting.
