Welcome to Mentone, VIC
The coastal suburb of Mentone in Melbourne is located 21km south-east of the city’s central business district. The area is best known for Mentone Beach and is a part of the City of Kingston local government area. The suburb has a population of over 11,500 people.
History
The suburb was established as a resort and named after the French town of the same name. Because that town was originally owned by the Italians many of the streets on the resort have adopted titles such as Florence and Venice. The area was first developed in the late 1800s and the Post Office was opened in 1984.
Mentone Fire Station was originally situated on the corner of Brindisi Street in 1906 until it was moved when the new building was constructed at Lalor in 1957.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
There are a vibrant shopping and dining area along Como Parade West and Balcombe Road that extends into the surrounding streets and lanes. A further commercial zone has since developed along a stretch of the Nepean Highway.
Both the beach and the local parkland provide plenty of facilities for locals and visitors to Mentone. The local Mentone Beach and Mentone Lifesaving Club also provided leisure activities. There is a National Aviation Museum and several schools in the area.
