Melton is a growing suburb in Victoria 35 kilometres west of Melbourne’s central business district. It has an estimated population of 7,500 and is the central town in the satellite city of Melton.

History

The town of Melton was first settled by squatters. They built sheep runs in the suburb during the 1830s. Some settlers used the area as a shortcut to the Ballarat goldfields during the Victorian gold rush.

In 1856, the first post office opened in Melton.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Melton hosts the city’s annual festival called The Djerriwarrh Festival. The weekend-long festival is famous for its parade along the high street. It also features live bands and entertainment for families.

There is a golf course in Melton on Melton Valley Drive. Melton has some lovely parks and good schools. The town boasts many restaurants including Italian, Thai and Chinese.
