Melbourne Airport, also known as the Tullamarine Airport, is Melbourne’s primary airport. It’s Australia’s second busiest airport, following Sydney.

History

Before the opening of Melbourne Airport, Melbourne’s main airport was Essendon Airport. In the 1950’s, the first airport struggled with the number of passengers that were coming through. The Government knew that another airport was needed. A search for a new airport began in 1958 and in 1959, the Government bought rural land in Tullamarine. In 1970, the new airport was opened, before it was expanded in 1988.

The airport’s name comes from the Aboriginal name Tullamareena.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The airport has 56 gates. 40 are domestic and 16 are international. The Sydney to Melbourne route is the fourth most travelled route in the world. The terminals were originally called the International, Domestic and South. They were given numbers in 2005.
