Hamilton is a small city in Western Victoria. It is in the Southern Grampians local government area. It is connected to Geelong by the Hamilton Highway and has a population of 10,104.

History

The Gunditjmara, Tjapwurong, Bunganditj are the first owners of the land around Hamilton. Fish traps and weirs have been found around Lake Condah.

Major Thomas Mitchell was the first European to travel the area in 1836. He described it as a fertile region, resulting in an influx of pastoralists. By 1839 there were several settlers in the area. Horse races were held along the Grange Burn flat. The township was formally declared in 1851.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The surrounding area supports a sheep grazing and agriculture. It produces 15% of Australia’s total wool. Retail is the main industry in the town centre.

Hamilton Gallery was established in 1961. It has a large collection of Australian and international art.
