Frankston North is a suburb of Melbourne, 38km south-east of Melbourne’s city centre. Its local government area is the City of Frankston and it has a population of over 5,500.

History

Frankston North, originally known as the Pines Forest Estate, is also known as “The Pines”.

In 1853, land known as “Balleymarong” was established and later acquired by the surveyor general Sir Andrew Clarke. The 1860 Victoria Land ACT led to the sale of Balleymarong. The government set aside land for the preservation and growth of timber.

In the 1970s and 1980s, “The Pines” had a reputation for being a “high crime” suburb. Changes came to “The Pines” reputation in the 1990s. Speed humps and roundabouts were introduced, stopping illegal street drag racing, and state-owned homes were sold as private homes.

Frankston North is home to the Pines Flora and Fauna Reserve, Pines Football Club, Pines Forest Swimming Centre, and the Rotary Club.
