We treat all aspects of hand related problems.
The Victorian Hand Surgery Associates is a group of independent specialist surgeons dedicated to excellence in care of the hand. We treat all aspects of hand related problems including arthritis, trauma, sports injuries, hand reconstruction, peripheral nerve surgery, microsurgery and free tissue transfer, paediatric and brachial plexus surgery.

Public hospital appointments are held at the Hand Surgery Unit at St Vincents Hospital, Royal Childrens Hospital and Dandenong Hospital.

We are the preferred providers for the Armed Services and are actively involved with teaching and training medical undergraduates, graduate plastic and orthopaedic registrars and post-fellowship overseas and Australian surgeons pursuing a career in hand surgery.

Research interests are undertaken within Victorian Hand Surgery Associates and at the Bernard O'Brien Institute of Microsurgery in St Vincents Hospital.

  • What is arthritis?

    Arthritis is non selective of age and may affect children, teenagers, young adults, middle aged and elderly alike. Arthritis usually causes pain and stiffness in and around one or more joints and can interfere with basic daily activities such as walking and preparing food. The symptoms can develop gradually or suddenly, and some conditions also involve the immune system and various internal organs of the body.

  • What causes arthritis?

    Scientists are studying risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing arthritis. Some of these factors have been identified: -Family history -Genetic factors -Environmental triggers are believed to be important. -Gender is a factor, with women accounting for 60% of all those diagnosed.

  • What are the symptoms?

    Different types of arthritis have different symptoms. In general, people who have arthritis feel pain and stiffness in the joints, muscles or other soft tissues surrounding the joints. Early diagnosis and treatment can help to reduce joint damage, and control the symptoms of arthritis. Common symptoms of arthritis: -Pain or tenderness in a joint -Joint stiffness, swelling, warmth and/or redness in the joint -Difficulty using or moving a joint normally

  • What is the brachial plexus?

    The brachial plexus is a network of nerves that originate near the neck and shoulder. These nerves begin at the spinal cord in the neck and control the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder.
