History

East Melbourne is one of Melbourne’s earliest suburbs. The locality was first drawn up in 1837 by surveyor Robert Hoddle. It wasn’t until 1840 that the area was settled, attracting many wealthy professionals.

Following a period of decline in the 1960s and 1970s, East Melbourne began to thrive again with the building of the high-rise Hilton Hotel. Property prices began to soar in the 1990s and many of the remaining mansions and terraces were placed on the heritage register.
