Docklands is an inner suburb of Melbourne just 1.2km from the central business district. It’s a coveted spot for company headquarters, and has a population of over 5,700.

History

Built over vast wetlands, Docklands remained largely undeveloped until the 1880s. Overseen by engineer John Coode, a new Victoria Dock began construction around this time. Industry soon sprang up, and Docklands became Melbourne’s busiest port. This lasted until the 1950s, when it proved ill-suited to the new container ships. The docks fell into disuse, although the area found brief fame in the 1990s due to underground raves. After several failed attempts, the urban renewal of Docklands was finally set in motion in 2000.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The ongoing development of Docklands has transformed it into a thriving hub of commerce and leisure. Bars, cafes and restaurants line the waterfront, and shopping options are plentiful. Docklands Stadium is home to several major sports teams, including the Western Bulldogs and AFC Melbourne. For a bit of macabre fun, try the Victoria Police Museum.
