Located 30km south-east of Melbourne’s central business district, the suburb of Chelsea is situated on Port Phillip Bay. It is a popular destination for bathers and sun seekers and it is one of the most important bayside suburbs in the area. The region has a population of over 7,000 people.

History

The railway arrived in Chelsea in 1907 and by the beginning of the 1900s, it was one of the main stations in the region. The station was the first place to bear the name “Chelsea” after the suburb in England which means “shelly river” in reference to the Thames Beach.
Following problems with flooding in the area, successful steps were taken to resolve the issue in 1951. The population of the area has seen a steady increase from 6,625 in 1933 to 28,670 during the census of 2011.

Lifestyle and entertainment

The large strip style shopping centre along the Nepean Highway houses a great selection of shops and supermarkets and the suburb has its own railway station on the Frankston Line.

The region has several churches and sporting communities including an Australian Rules Football Team. The AFL legend Leigh Matthews was one well-known player who was active in the junior football league there.
