Carnegie is a suburb of Melbourne, 12km southeast from the CBD. Its local government area is the City of Glen Eira and it has a population of over 16,000.

History

The suburb was first called Rosstown after William Murray Ross, a property developer and entrepreneur. The name changed due to Ross’ failed speculative developments. It was changed to Carnegie in 1909 in an unsuccessful attempt to get Andrew Carnegie, a philanthropist, to hand over money for a library.

Carnegie Post Office opened in 1911. It was originally part of the City of Caulfield. By the 1920s, it had a large commercial area. In the 1930s, the Carnegie theatre was a popular attraction with locals.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The main shopping area is on Koornang Road between Dandenong Road and Neerim Road. The suburb is home to restaurants and grocers offering many different cuisines. These include Korean, Chinese, Thai, Greek, French, and Russian.
