Carlton is a beautiful suburb of Victoria with a population of around 13,500. It is situated just 2 kilometres from Melbourne’s central business district and offers great nightlife.
History
The area of Carlton is believed to be named after the home of the Prince of Wales. Carlton was founded in 1851 and care was taken to build streets and reserves. In 1858, the North Melbourne Brewery opened in Bouverie Street. It was sold in 1864 to a man called Edward Latham. You can find the bluestone offices in the same street today.
By 1860, the town had five schools including one in Faraday Street. A football club was formed in 1864 and won premierships in 1873 and 1875.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Carlton is known for its “Little Italy” shopping precinct in Lygon Street. It has some beautiful gardens and Victorian buildings. Lygon Street is also home to some delicious Italian restaurants and is the birthplace of Melbourne’s cafe culture.
The famous La Mama Theatre can be found in Carlton, along with Trades Hall and the ruins of Carlton Brewery. Carlton is close to Melbourne University and has lots of student accommodation. From a cinema and entertainment venues to some trendy pubs, the suburb is great for fantastic nights out.
