This small town in central Victoria was at the heart of the 1850s Gold Rush. It has a population of 3,200 people.

History

Located near the site of Victoria’s first official gold find, Buninyong was originally settled in the late 1830s. The name refers to the shape of a nearby mountain and is believed to mean ‘man lying on his back with his knees raised’ in the Aboriginal language.

The town’s post office opened in 1845 to service the European settlers and later those attracted to the area for its gold. Wide open streets, still in evidence today, were created in anticipation of more growth, but the town’s prosperity ceased at the end of the gold rush.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Many homes from the ‘boom’ era are still in evidence around Buninyong today. The town also has the state’s oldest botanic gardens.

Buninyong has its own Aussie Rules Football team, and golf course.
