Bundoora sits just 16km to the north of Melbourne’s central business district. The suburb has a thriving population of 25,709.

History

The area was the home of the Kurnaj-bearing tribe. Bundoora takes its name from a 19th-century tribesman called Keelbundoora. The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1835. William Wedge-Drake surveyed the land in 1837.

The area around Bundoora has a history of racehorse breeding. John Matthew Vincent Smith established his breeding ground, Bundoora Park, in 1899.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

There are two university campuses in Bundoora. These belong to La Trobe University and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. There are also a number of schools and colleges. The suburb also has various healthcare facilities and parks.

Bundoora Park is home to Mt Cooper. Some claim that this is the highest point in all of metropolitan Melbourne. Local landmarks include Big Daddy’s Pizzeria and Greensborough Lanes bowling alley.
