History

In 1842, a lady called Miss Amelia Shaw became the licensee of the first hotel in Brunswick. It was called the Retreat Inn. The hotel was rebuilt in 1892 and renamed the Retreat Hotel. It can still be found in the area today.

The first retail shop opened in Brunswick in 1850. It was a butcher’s owned by a man called Henry Search. In 1908, Brunswick officially became a suburb.

Businesses in Brunswick are mainly located on Sydney Road. There are a number of restaurants and supermarkets, as well as a covered shopping centre. The Sarah Sands Hotel is the place to go for live music.

The town hosts the Sydney Road Street Party every year. You can get around using buses, trams and trains. Brunswick also has lots of parks and recreation areas.
