This is a question only you can answer. Teeth stain for a number of reasons even when you clean them well. Smoking is an obvious cause of stain and it may be that be having your teeth professionally cleaned by us is all that is required. Some of the foods we eat and drink can also leave chemicals on the tooth surface which can only be removed by bleaching.
There are essentially two ways to have your teeth bleached; Home bleach and In Office bleach. In any chemical reaction, and bleaching is essentially a chemical reaction, we need to consider time (the time taken for the reaction to occur) and concentration of the chemicals reacting. With this in mind, a high concentration usually takes less time and a low concentration takes a longer time.
I prefer to use the Home Bleach system because even though it is a lower concentration, and takes longer, I believe its effect is deeper and gives a better long term result. Most importantly it gives you control over how white you want you teeth to become. The protocol is to wear the bleaching trays for 2 hours a day for 2 weeks. After 7 days you should notice some change. After 10 days your will notice good change. You may even want to extend beyond this to 4 weeks.
The In Office Bleach is the type you see on 'reality TV'. It uses a higher concentration and therefore a result can be achieved quicker. Here we can get your teeth white but we do not have as much control as to how white they will be.We can also use a combination of In Office Bleaching followed up with Home Bleach
Yes. All of the studies show it is safe to bleach teeth. There does not appear to be any adverse changes to the enamel or dentine of the teeth or the gums and other oral tissues. There may be sensitivity in the teeth following bleaching but this will pass. The gums are often improved with bleaching because the oxygen byproduct of bleaching kills of some of the bugs that cause some gum disease. New composite fillings should be delayed for about a month.
Coming to the dentist every six months will not stop you getting holes in your teeth but it will mean that we can treat any cavities early and while it is relatively small. Smaller problems are usually easier and less expensive to deal with than big problems.Gum disease is best treated early and your six monthly check up with us should ensure that. Gum disease is usually painless and you may not be aware of it. Six monthly cleans are easier, less painful and less costly.
That depends on many factors. A missing upper front tooth poses a cosmetic problem. Missing back teeth present a more functional problem. Each case needs to be assessed separately and a decision on whether and how to replace a tooth depends on what we are trying to achieve by replacing it.
Missing teeth can be replaced by a removable partial denture, a fixed bridge or implant supported crowns. Each of these options, including an option of no treatment needs to be considered when deciding how best to replace the missing tooth or teeth.
