Whyalla has the third largest population in South Australia. It is home to 22,654 people. The suburb is located on the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula and is 75 kilometres south of Port Augusta.

History

Before the arrival of the Europeans, Whyalla was lived-in by the Banggarla Aboriginal people. It was in 1802 when the first European, Matthew Flinders visited the area.

The suburb was first named Hummock’s Hill when it was founded in 1901. A tramway was built between Iron Knob and Hummock’s Hill in the same year. The first shipment of iron ore took place in 1903.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Whyalla provides locals and visitors with lots of museums, public tours and attractions. There is also a marina with a jetty in the town for keen fishermen.

In addition to the sightseeing activities, the area has the Westlands shopping centre. Whyalla is also home to a good few primary and secondary schools, as well as tertiary education centres.
