Wayville is an inner suburb of Adelaide in the City of Unley. It is bordered to the north with the southern Parkland of Adelaide and to the south with the tramline. It has a population of around 1,700.

History

The place where Wayville now stands was a milk run rented from the South Australian Company in the 1860s. In the 1870s, King William Road was extended down south to Greenhill Road. It still forms the Wayville’s north-east boundary.

Originally named Goodwood, it was renamed Wayville after Reverend James Way in 1899. Wayville Post Office opened around 1909 and Wayville Military Post Office was open from 1940 to 1946.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Wayville is best known for hosting the Royal Adelaide Show at the Royal Adelaide Showgrounds. Known simply as “The Show”, it is an annual agricultural show that attracts around half a million people every year. This makes it the biggest event in South Australia.
