History

At first, the suburb was called Zillmere North. It took on its modern name in 1993. The name Taigum comes from an Aboriginal word for Cabbage Tree Creek. The original spelling was Tygham.

Taigum’s population has grown steadily since 1976. There was an unusually high rise between 1991 and 2001. In that decade, the population nearly doubled from 3,550 to 6,453.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

More than half of Taigum’s residential properties are houses. A quarter of residencies are townhouses. The area is mostly populated by families. Most of the residents were born in Australia.

Shoppers in Taigum enjoy the Central shopping centre. The drive-in shopping centre opened in 1982. It houses 62 shops as well as a supermarket.
