Southport is a suburb 73km away from Brisbane. With a population of over 28,000, Southport is known as the central business district of the City of the Gold Coast.

History

The first surveyed settlement in the area was carried out in 1874. At that time, Southport home to a number of timber mills that provided logs to nearby Brisbane. In 1875, the area originally known as Nerang Creek Heads was renamed Southport. This is because it was the southernmost port in Queensland.

In 1883, the construction of the Southport Pier attracted Queensland Governor Sir Anthony Musgrave and his wife Lady Musgrave. They regularly holidayed at a residence known as the ‘Summer Place’ which can still be seen today on the site of The Southport School.

These days, Southport is a popular destination for tourists visiting Queensland. The area continues to experience extraordinary growth, particularly in the business district. There are tall office blocks next to picturesque marinas, shopping centres and popular attractions such as Sea World.
